My Mama Uniform: Vicki

Vicki is not only the genius behind the blog Tippy Tupps, but also somehow finds the time to be a creative mastermind too. She has a beautiful selection of products available under her label ‘Bear Wear’ that are just divine. I wasn’t at all surprised to find that she is a self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Vintage’ and that she can effortlessly carry off this title with style. Here, we chat about her approach beauty and why exactly she planned her wedding in a mere 48 hours…

What is your daily skincare routine?

Simple really – in the morning it’s washed and in the evening, it’s moisturized after a bath or shower. That’s it! I always think I need to take better care of my skin but I’ve noticed the more products I use on it the greasier it becomes.

Do you wear make-up? What’s your routine?

Only on special occasions like nights out and seeing as that’s happened once since my son was born in July last year, it’s a very rare occurrence! In fact, I recently noticed that the vast majority of the makeup I own I bought when I was at university. I graduated in 2003!! Hangs head in shame.

It’s something I want to do more though, as I suffer from rosacea which I get self-conscious about but I never seem to be able to find the time.

What do you do to style and care for your hair?

I have very greasy hair which needs to be washed every day. Every now and then I try and leave it a day and then instantly regret it as it becomes a disgusting mess. I need to mix it up with shampoo and conditioner else I find it stops working so I’m not brand loyal at all.

I do style it every day though and keep it at a midi-length to ensure it’s easy to manage. A quick flick of the hair straighteners, a little wax and spray to fix it and I’m done for the day.  I found when I kept it longer all I did was stick it up in a ‘mum-bum’ which nether suited me nor did my hair any good.

What’s your go-to ‘everyday’ outfit?

A dress – my wardrobe is usually bursting with a variety of dresses in jersey or cotton fabric. I’m a classic hourglass figure with a big bust and hips and in between there is a waist somewhere. I need something like a dress to prove it exists else I just end up looking enormous. However, in winter I am prone to a tunic top, leggings and boots for warmth!

Where do you shop?

I used to shop on the high street but getting chance seems to be a thing of the past as mooching the shops with 2 children under 3 years of age just isn’t going to happen! Plus, there’s the extra issue that so many other people are buying the same things.

Nowadays I find I’m a bit of a vintage queen! I love the thought of finding some hidden gems in a charity shop as I can find some amazing bargains that can be made into sometime special under the sewing machine.

Do you have an all-time favourite item of clothing?

I used to have the most comfortable grey zipped hoody that I got when I was about 14. 20 years later it was full of so many holes my husband finally made me throw it away. It’s been replaced with an oversized rugby shirt which is my go to extra layer on cold days in the house!

What was the most expensive item of clothing you’ve ever bought?

Some Jimmy Choo sandals when I was 16. I was working full time in a sandwich factory over that summer and had ‘proper’ money for the first time in my life. With no outgoings, all the money was mine which I promptly blew in a summer of spending and fun.

How do you change your look for a date night?

I just add make up!! Goodness, that sounds so bad! I do have a few dresses that aren’t suitable for day wear due to cut but on a whole I only really do my hair a little better and put on some make up.  My days of heels and clothes specifically dedicated to going out seem behind me for now!

What’s your favourite thing about being a Mum?

Everything! Their little faces when you walk into the room. The way they run to you when they’re excited to tell you all about it. Their sleepy cuddles. Watching their personalities grow and being able to see the world in a whole different light through their eyes.

Speaking of children, how do you like to dress your kids?

I love dressing my daughter as a bit of a tomboy as she looks so cute and it really suits her. Recently though she’s turned into such a girlie girl that I don’t get chance very often as I tend to get send back into her wardrobe either for a dress or for ‘something pink’!

Boys clothes for Henry are a little less versatile I think, but I love the little old man look that you can get for them. He’s a little chunk though so doesn’t always suit that style so ends up in a mixture of high street or supermarket clothes as they’re such excellent value for money. Especially seeing as he’s in one size for such a short space of time at the moment.

Have you got any ‘life-hacks’ for busy Mums?

Less of a life-hack but my advice would be to shower before bed. Yes, you’re sometimes so tired you can’t function but doing so means that you’re always good to go in the morning. Failing that, dry shampoo!

Can you think of an occasion that you felt the most beautiful?

My wedding day I think. It was planned within 48 hours so there was no time for being self-conscious. I’m very lucky that I have a husband who regularly tells me how beautiful I am and how much he loves me.

That sounds exciting! Why was your wedding planned with such sort notice?

Well, it wasn’t actually planned that way. More that we were headed to upstate New York to visit some friends and do a spot of snowboarding. On the way there on the flight we were chatting away and marrage came up in conversation. We somehow got to “wouldn’t it be funny if we got married out here” and “why not, lets do it!” We didn’t know if we could, so off we trotted to city hall on arrival and not only was it possible but we also booked it!
48 hours later we were married.  We jumped across the border to Niagara Falls for a mini honeymoon within a holiday and then came back to NY state and finally went snowboarding.  Then it was just the case of breaking the news to our family seeing as we weren’t even engaged before we left !

Who is your style icon?

Probably Kelly Brook. I think she has a ‘real’ shape and a style that is both feminine and sexy.

Is there anything you want to change about your style?

I always have the best of intentions to make more or an effort: to wear a little make up and be the best version of me every day. Then my son keeps me up half the night and my daughter throws a tantrum so before I know it I’ve ran out of time!

If you’re having a tough day, what do you do to make yourself feel better?

Have a bath! If I’m stressed, tired, feeling a little fragile or just had a crap day then I find a lovely soak in the tub with a good book or a little browsing on my phone makes everything a little better. It gives me a little ‘me’ time and a little space when I’m all touched out and lets me refocus.

Thanks so much, Vicki!
