Of all the people to feature in the Mama Uniform series, Sophie Mei Lan undoubtedly has the broadest approach to style alternating between spending her day in gym wear before totally rocking belly dancing costumes. As a blogger and vlogger at Mama Mei, she leads an incredibly active life as a freelance journalist, publish and film maker. Despite all the demands of these roles, she still finds time to keep fit and is a passionate mental health campaigner. I hope you enjoying getting to know her…

What is your daily skincare routine?

Wash face and slather on some Moringa oil or avon moisturiser and temple spa under eye cream depending on how my skin feels. Then before bed. I use some avon eye make up remover, forever living toner and facial oil or for a treat neal’s yard cream or my avon soufflé moisturiser. If I’m not too tired I love Palmers Cocoa Butter for my body and a bit of bio oil for problem areas. I also use Xen-tan weekly to keep my head to toe glow!

Do you wear make-up? What’s your routine?

I workout daily so I prefer not to wear make up in the week but if I have to film or model – I tend to wear make up or if I’m nervous about a meeting and need a mask!



What do you do to style and care for your hair?

I’ve never had my hair permenantly died so it’s in pretty good condition. My Chinese genes mean my hair is naturally straight unless I’ve been wearing a mum-bun all day then I have a wave.

I towel dry and let my hair dry naturally as I only use a hairdryer and curling tongues for special occasions. So au natural most of the time apart from shampoo and conditioner + baby sick.



What’s your go-to ‘everyday’ outfit?

My gym kit and trainers as I run everywhere instead of using transport I’ll walk or run so I like to be in comfy gear. I love my Brooke’s running leggings as they pull in my mum tum and I’ll wear a vest from primark or H&M.

Where do you shop?

DW sports, Up & Running, Primark, Asda and charity shops.

Do you have an all-time favourite item of clothing?

It has to be my professional bellydance costumes as they flatter my figure and are extremely sparkly. I get them from The Shimmy Shop in Bradford or Eman Zaki in Egypt.



What was the most expensive item of clothing you’ve ever bought?

Three wedding dresses for my wedding! One for the cathedral service and wedding breakfast, a white bellydance one for the evening show and a coral wedding dress for the night (with matching kurt Geiger trainers).

How do you change your look for a date night?

I love wearing dresses from Lindy Bop or Monsoon or Debenhams. Anything that suits curvy figures and shows cleavage! And if I’m feeling in the mood to go out I’ll wear my Jimmy Choo shoes. If not I’ll wear my ballet pumps. And I do wear make up then.



What’s your favourite thing about being a Mum?

I love how mindful I am now of our surroundings. I love having constant company and I love how they make me smile and laugh. Being a mum is just the messiest but best thing ever.

Speaking of children, how do you like to dress your kids?

My 5 year old dresses herself as she has style which I love. Although she has to suppress that during the week to wear her school uniform.

My youngest just wears hand me downs but she loves costumes and anything colourful and comfy.

Whatever they wear they can get dirty and rip. We’re not precious.

Have you got any ‘life-hacks’ for busy Mums?

Dance whilst doing the cleaning. Buy a mini Hoover so the kids can have fun helping.Make lots of lists!

Can you think of an occasion that you felt the most beautiful?

On my wedding day I felt like a princess during the day, it was the most magical and fun day ever.

Who is your style icon?

I love Myleene Klass because people say we look alike! I also love Dita Von Teese and Amanda Holden.

Is there anything you want to change about your style?

I’ve recently upgraded my gym kit so I look a bit smarter and love Sweaty Betty stuff. But often I’m either dressed in sports clothes or I’m in a big frilly dress, I’m all or nothing. So I guess I need a middle option for meetings so I don’t look like a chav all the time or like I’m off clubbing.



Oh and I’m sure my husband would prefer me not to wear big hoop earrings all the time – but that I refuse to change.

If you’re having a tough day, what do you do to make yourself feel better?

A good coffee helps everything but I use exercise and yoga to stay sane as well as blogging about things.
