Nicola (otherwise known as Mummy to Dex) is my font of knowledge for Baby-led weaning and awesome recipes to feed small children. Not only is her site great for food inspiration, she shares her life with her beautiful son Dexter and their family life in Liverpool. I’ve loved getting to know her over the past few months and stalking her a little on Instagram!
Thankfully, she’s stepped up to take part in my Mama Uniform Series to chat about Mum Buns, the best make-up, and the awesome Alexa Chung…
What is your daily skincare routine?
I use Clinique’s three step daily routine. I use the Rinse Off Foaming Cleanser with the sonic brush, followed by the Clarifying Lotion for Combination skin, finishing off the Dramatically different moisturising lotion. (Although at the moment I’m using a Soap and Glory moisturiser that I got for Christmas) I’ve used Clinique since I was in my early twenties and have found that it has been amazing to combat my oily t-zone and reduce those pesky hormonal blemishes I get on my chin.
Do you wear make-up? What’s your routine?
I do indeed wear make up. In fact, I am one of these people who can’t leave the house without it. After I’ve finished my skincare routine, I add a primer. I am currently using Smashbox’s Photo Finish primer. I then use Maybelline’s 7 in 1 BB cream followed by a little bit of concealer to hide any blemishes or red areas. Right now I’m using Benefit’s Boing concealer. I then do my eyebrows using a Laura Mercier eye brow pencil and an E.L.F palette and add a Chanel blush and a Benefit’s Hoola bronzer along my cheekbones. I finish off with lashings of mascara. I was given a Boujois mascara for Christmas which I’m loving at the moment. I like to mix designer and high street brands. I was in heaven when I found an E.L.F shop in New York and got around 50 pieces of make up for around $70. I don’t mind splurging on a designer piece that is amazing either. I love Mac, Benefit, Chanel and Nars. My husband is taking me to the Mac counter for my birthday to pick out some new bits.
What do you do to style and care for your hair?
My hair is one thing that I truly neglect. Most days I brush it and tie it up in a Mum bum so it is out of the way of grasping baby hands. When I want to make an effort, I do a curly blow. Basically I use a metal round brush and blow dry small sections around the brush, before curling the section up with my finger and securing with a bobby pin. I leave it like that for a couple of hours and undo all the bobby pins to reveal luscious curls. I only need a tiny bit of hair spray to keep the curls in place for a day or two.
What’s your go-to ‘everyday’ outfit?
My everyday outfit is a pair of leggings and a top – a jumper, vest or t-shirt depending on the weather. It’s extremely boring, but comfortable
Where do you shop?
My favourite shops to buy womenswear are ASOS, New Look, H&M and Primark. I will admit I haven’t been great at spending money on clothes for the past 18 months because of being on maternity pay and saving for a deposit for a house. My wardrobe needs a serious update.
Do you have an all-time favourite item of clothing?
I have a blue dress which I absolutely adore. It was only a cheap thing from H&M but it can be dressed up with heels, tights and a fab piece of jewellery or dressed down with flats. It has a scoop back and is extremely flattering – especially when I was rocking the post baby belly.
What was the most expensive item of clothing you’ve ever bought?
It has to be my wedding dress, especially considering I only wore it for one day. I won’t say how much it cost – but it was a lot.
How do you change your look for a date night?
I get rid of the Mum bum and make an effort to blow dry and curl my hair. I wear jewellery and take off my Fitbit. I will always wear a dress if I am going out and make more of an effort with my make up- eye liner, foundation and more contouring.
What’s your favourite thing about being a Mum?
I just love being able to spend time with this little guy who is a little bit of me and a little bit of my husband. He is such a happy, content baby who is fiercely independent. It’s amazing to be able to watch him learn and grow into this bubbly and funny little boy.
Speaking of children, how do you like to dress your kids?
Dexter certainly dresses better than me. I love him in leggings and dress him in them as often as I can. I love navy blues, reds and whites so I often have him looking very nautical. I always make sure he is wearing a matching bandana bib as well. I don’t like him wearing jeans because I think they look so uncomfortable. He is definitely a vest, leggings and bandana bib kind of baby. I’d love him to wear hats but he will not keep them on for love nor money.
Have you got any ‘life-hacks’ for busy Mums?
If you’re like me and are horrified about the prospect of leaving the house without makeup, then invest in some BB cream. I haven’t worn full on foundation for over a year now and it is so much better for my skin. A BB cream will give you just about enough coverage and is so quick and easy to apply. You don’t really need to worry about blending or tide marks because it’s really so light.
Can you think of an occasion that you felt the most beautiful?
It would be my wedding day. I had a professional make up artist to do my make up and she did an amazing job. I’ve never been able to replicate it since! I’ve never had so many people come to me and tell me how beautiful I looked. I truly felt like a princess.
Who is your style icon?
Alexa Chung. I love her casual but cool style of skinny jeans and oversized tops, mini skirts with thick tights, baggy dresses and that fringe! I love cute little fringes like that! [Note: I totally agree! I love her!!]
Is there anything you want to change about your style?
I definitely would like to get out of the leggings a bit more, but I am sure once I return to work and I’m back to being in my pencil skirt and blouse all day, I will crave my leggings once more!
If you’re having a tough day, what do you do to make yourself feel better?
I have a long hot bath (and I mean steaming hot) with lots of bubbles and just relax. I am lucky that my husband will always do his best to settle Dexter when I’ve had a really tough day and let me have a couple of hours of doing nothing.
Thank you, Nicola!
